I am a career molecular genetics research technician by day and a hobbyist pastelist in my spare time.
I discovered pastels in the winter of 2008 when, on a whim, I registered for a weekend pastel introduction workshop given by an Ottawa school board. I purchased a half-stick set of Rembrandt pastels for the class. I was hooked! I loved the feel and texture of pastels and how natural they felt in my hands.
I spend much of the spring and summer months working on my garden and doing photography, while the fall and winter months are spent in my studio (a basement guest bedroom) working with my pastels. Each piece takes several hours and months to complete. For instance, "1951 Ford" took 50 hours and over 6 months to finish. It is a labour of love.
Aside from high school art classes and two or three miscellanious workshops, I have no formal training in the visual arts.
For the first time, in 2011, I entered a painting (1951 Ford) in the PSEC juried exhibition in Montreal. My entry was accepted.
